David was born on October 11, 1954 in Atlanta, GA, son of the late Harvey and Dell Hardman Downs.
David graduated from Woodward Academy of Atlanta. He received an Associate of Science Degree in Education in June of 1975 from Young Harris College in North Georgia. This was a very special time in his life where he gained many lifelong friends. He continued his education at Mercer University of Atlanta, completing his Bachelor of Arts with a focus on Economics in June of 1982. David worked with Bartow County and served for many years in several positions. His last job was driving a transit bus for the county. He really enjoyed caring for others.
On October 19, 1991, David wed his only love, Toni Shepherd Downs, whom he always called his “bride” during their thirty one years of marriage.
David was a talented musician who played guitar and piano. He enjoyed playing during services at his church, Bartow Cumberland Presbyterian where he and Toni were members. He was a high-school football official and referee with Etowah Valley and NW GA Football Association for eighteen years.
David’s witty sense of humor and positive outlook on life will be missed by many friends and family including his two precious puppies, Sam and Finn. It was obvious to all, especially these last few years, that David had a deep faith and strong love for the Lord. He was an inspiration to all through many ups and downs and health battles. He has finally won and received his reward.
David is preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Cheryl Mills.
He is survived by his wife, Toni Downs; Aunt Mary Alice “Dootsie” Curtis of Florida; Uncle Roy Hardman of North Carolina; numerous cousins
