

Mr. Purcell was born on August 9, 1922 in Chamblee, GA, son of the late James W. Purcell and Daisy Gay Purcell.
Mr. Purcell proudly served his country during World War II in the United States Coast Guard for two years, twenty months and fourteen days. He was also a dedicated mail carrier for the United States Postal Service in Chamblee, GA for forty-two years. He was an active member of East Calhoun Church of God, a Mason for the Chamblee Sardis Mason Lodge #444 and an honorary member of the John W. Akin Lodge #537 of Taylorsville, GA where he earned his sixty year pin. Mr. Purcell will be most remembered for being a true and faithful servant of the Lord. He praised the Lord with his last breath and left an amazing testimony behind. He was truly an inspiration to all who had the great fortune of knowing him. He will be forever missed, but never forgotten.
Mr. Purcell is preceded in death by his sons, Samuel Edwin Purcell and James Hugh Purcell; daughter, Deborah Hendrix.
Survivors include his loving wife of forty-four years, Vera Waters Purcell; sons, Steve Purcell (Rhonda) of Covington, GA and Rick Payne (Debbie) of Sale Creek, TN; granddaughter, Alecia Hendrix and her fiancé, James Finchum of Cartersville, GA; many grandchildren.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at two o’clock in the afternoon on Thursday, May 28, 2015 in the Chapel of Owen Funeral Home with Pastor Keith Reid officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memory Gardens.
Serving as pallbearers are Steve Purcell, James Finchum, Jerry Satterfield, Shane Garner, Justin Bell, Clark Milsap, Joshua Young and Nick Guerra.
Visitation will be held from four o’clock in the afternoon until nine on Wednesday, May 27, 2015 at Owen Funeral Home.
The family kindly requests that all attendees wear red in celebration of Mr. Purcell’s homecoming.
