Born on March 12, 1939, in Rome, GA, he was the son of the late Herman and Mattie White Newton. George was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather whose quiet strength, wit, and craftsmanship left a lasting impression on all who knew him.
He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Janice Tippens Newton, whom he married on March 29, 1969; his daughter, Juliette Smith (Joey); his son, George Young Newton, Jr. (Lauren); and his cherished grandchildren, Logan and Rylie Smith and Madison and Savannah Newton.
A 1957 graduate of Adairsville High School, George went on to complete a two-year program at Coosa Valley Technical School in just 18 months—an early sign of the intelligence and dedication that would define his life. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1962, serving as a Medical Specialist before continuing in the Army Reserve until 1967.
George dedicated 39 years to Union Carbide (later Clorox), working as an extruder operator for six years, a quality control technician for three, and then as a draftsman engineer for the remainder of his career. Known for his precision and ingenuity, he excelled in every role he took on.
A man of faith, George was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church. Though soft-spoken, he was known for his sharp mind, sense of humor, and gentle wit. He had a natural gift for working with his hands and was truly a jack of all trades—capable of everything from braiding his daughter’s hair to building his own backyard shop in which he went on to make many memories with his family. His love for his family was evident in everything he did, and he was especially proud to be "Pawpaw" to his grandchildren.
A Gathering of Family and Friends will be held on Tuesday, June 3, 2025, beginning at 12:00 p.m., with a Celebration of Life Service to follow at 2:00 p.m., officiated by Dr. Patrick Latham. Burial will follow at Eastview Cemetery in Adairsville, GA.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Tabernacle Baptist Church Seek Capital Campaign for the new youth and administration building currently under construction. Checks may be made out to Tabernacle Baptist Church with "Seek Capital Campaign" written in the memo line and may be dropped off at the church office or mailed to Tabernacle Baptist Church, 31 Douglas Street, Cartersville, GA 30120.
George Newton’s legacy of love, hard work, and quiet strength will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
