Harold Lee Wright

Mr. Wright was born November 30, 1921 in Bartow County, the son of the late James William and Lillie Louella Poole Wright and was a member of Grace Baptist Church.

After graduating from Cartersville High School, Wright worked as a carpenter, a surveyor, and in Dean’s Hardware Store until he volunteered for the U.S. Navy in December of 1941. He served as a Motor Machinist’s Mate 1st Class on an LCS(L) in the Pacific Theater of Operations. He saw combat in the Solomon Islands, at the Battle of the Coral Sea, and the invasion of Okinawa. His ship was present in Tokyo Bay for the Surrender Ceremony.

After World War II, he returned to Cartersville where he worked as a bookkeeper for E.Z. Mills and as an insurance agent for Liberty National Life Insurance Company. He was an early member of Gilmer Street Baptist Church, now Grace Baptist. He and his wife Mary were active youth leaders and served the church in many other capacities. He loved music and sang bass in quartets, singing on local radio as well as at numerous funerals and revivals at churches all over northern Georgia. He also served as interim director of music at Gilmer Street Baptist and other area churches.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Mary Chambless Wright.

Surviving is his daughter, Felecia Wright-McDuffie and her husband, Patrick J. Gibbs of Marietta, a sister, Pauline Holland of Cartersville, nephews and their wives, Allen and Paulette Holland of Cartersville, Rodney and Syble Holland of Rockmart, Terry and Debbie Holland of Cartersville, Joel and Cindy Holland of Cartersville.

Funeral services will be held Monday, January 17, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at Grace Baptist Church with Rev. Doug Harris officiating.

Burial will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Sunday afternoon from 3:00-5:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Music Ministry of Grace Baptist Church.
