
Born on October 31, 1924 in Cedar Bluff, Alabama, he was the second of four sons born to Alec and Florence Reeves Owens. He served his country in the United States Army, Navy and retired from the Air Force in 1966 moving his family to Aurora, Colorado. Upon retiring from a Civil Service position in 1984, he and his wife, Dorothy Abigail “Dillon” Owens, moved “back home” to Cartersville. He was employed as a Security Guard at Cartersville High School (1984 - 1988) where he was fondly referred to as "Harvey J.” by the students. He served as a Park Attendant at Dellinger Park (1988 - 2000), retiring on his 76th birthday. He enjoyed the outdoors, sharing war stories and spending time with his Chihuahua, “Chief Little Man.”
Mr. Owens is preceded in death by daughter, Robin; wife of 60 years, Dorothy; and brothers, Curtis, Orbin and Roy.
Mr. Owens is survived by two sons, Jerry Owens of Las Vegas, Nevada and Mickey Owens (Mary Beth) of Cartersville; daughter and caregiver, Donna Owens of Cartersville; three grandchildren, J.B. Owens (Alma) of Chula Vista, California, Robin Hodder (Broady) of Seattle, Washington and Cherry Moore (Brandon) of Cartersville; four great-grandchildren, Ruben and Isabella Owens of Chula Vista, Kelly Hodder of Seattle, and Cherish Moore of Cartersville; two sisters-in-law, Edna Barnette of Cartersville and Glenda McNeel of Appling, Georgia; and many nieces and nephews.
Dad, thank you for the many sacrifices that you and Mom made in providing for our needs and education. You are loved and are already terribly missed!
Graveside services will be conducted Wednesday, September 7th at 11:00 a.m. at Oak Hill Cemetery with Rev. Kenny Jacobs officiating. Interment will follow with military honors.
The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at Owen Funeral Home.
