Horace Woodward Howard Jr.

Mr. Howard was born June 28, 1924, in Rydal, Georgia, to Horace Woodward Howard, Sr. and Ora Hilburn Howard. He was the owner of Howard Insurance Company in Cartersville, GA until his retirement in 1990. Horace was an elder and long time member of the First Presbyterian Church of Cartersville, and most recently of the Bartow Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Rydal. He loved spending time with his family, boating, traveling with his wife in their RV throughout the U.S. and Canada, and gardening on the family farm. He was also a pilot, and served for several years as a member of the Cartersville Airport Authority, where he was instrumental in the early development of the Cartersville airport. Horace was very involved in Cartersville’s Rotary Club, where he had perfect attendance for over 50 years, serving as President during 1964. He was also active in the Cartersville/Bartow Chamber of Commerce, serving as Chairman in 1965. Horace graduated from Cartersville High School and was offered a football scholarship to the University of Tennessee, but chose to serve his country as he joined the U.S. Marines where he served for three years during World War II.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Miriam Golden Howard; son and daughter-in-law, Michael & June Howard of Cartersville; son, Patrick Howard of Lawrenceville; son and daughter-in-law, Woodward & Linda Howard of Huntsville, AL. Grandchildren include Robert and Kate Howard of Cartersville; Taylor Howard of Marietta; Brittney Howard of Parsons, TN; Mark Howard of Lawrenceville; and Austin and Connor Howard of Huntsville, AL.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Horace Woodward Howard, Sr. and Ora Hilburn Howard, brother Walter E. Burton, and son Robert Allison Howard.

Visitation will be at Owen Funeral Home Thursday evening from 5:00-8:00 p.m.. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 P.M. Friday, April 22, 2011 at Oak Hill Cemetery. Officiating will be Pastor Mark Rackley of the Bartow Cumberland Presbyterian Church.
