He was born October 16, 1939 to Clara Adelle (Hightower) Scott and Belah Paul Scott of Cartersville, GA. As a young boy, he spent hours with his dog, Rip, exploring all around his hometown. He was very active in the scouts, eventually earning the Eagle Scout honor. His other interests were snakes and Native American lore. He participated in the opening of the Etowah Indian Mounds performing a dance in full costume. Upon graduating from Cartersville High School in 1957, he attended West Georgia College and transferred to the University of Georgia, graduating in 1961 with a BS in Chemistry.
For a few summers during his college years, he worked at Unto These Hills outdoor drama in Cherokee, NC as an Eagle Dancer. There he met his future wife, Mamie Sue Howlett. They married in June 1961 and worked one last season at the outdoor drama together.
A laboratory job offer from Sinclair Oil Company took them to Chicago, Illinois. Later in 1962, they had a daughter, Andrea Corinne. In 1963, they moved to Sewanee, TN where Jim would teach chemistry at the Sewanee Military Academy (later to become Sewanee Academy), and in 1965 their son Micah Frederick was born.
Always wanting to learn more, Jim earned an MAT degree in Physics from the University of the South and an MS degree in Organic Chemistry from Middle Tennessee State University.
After assisting with a cave rescue in the Sewanee area, Jim learned more about mountaineering and a new hobby was found. Skills learned from that took him to Outward Bound in Colorado and Zermatt, Switzerland participating with or leading groups of students in mountaineering. While in Zermatt, he climbed the Matterhorn.
Other interests included volunteering as a volunteer fireman and EMT and teaching EMC/EMT courses, volunteering with the National Ski Patrol at Ober Gatlinburg, canoeing, woodworking, guitar playing, camping. There was hardly a time he and the family were just sitting around home!
Being a Scott, he was introduced to the Scottish heritage attending the Highland Games at Stone Mountain, GA. The next year, the entire family was outfitted in their family tartan kilts. Jim served a term as Clan Chieftain of Clan Scott USA.
He left teaching in 1981 to return to laboratory work at the Central Lab of Georgia Power and worked with Georgia Power for many years in quality control. Before retiring he started working independently as an ISO 9000 / 14000 quality control auditor, and taught lead auditing classes taking him to places all over the globe.
Eventually retiring for good, he spent time with his children and best buddy Kelly Hardin, whom he met at Camp Sidney Dew.
Micah and Corinne want to thank all the wonderful staff at The Fountains of Cartersville for the loving care provided to their Dad for the last 16 months. Thanks also to Tapestry Hospice and Silver Companions for their dedicated care.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Jean Scott Smith and his brother Rev. Philip P. Scott. He is survived by his children Andrea Corinne Scott of Cartersville, GA and Micah Frederick Scott of Lawrenceville, GA., niece Marianne James, nephew Paul Kelley (Audrey), great- niece Blaine Kelley and great-great-nephew, Hank Woodruff, several Barton cousins and step nieces and nephews.
