Betty Jean Goss Cowart, 92, of Cartersville, Georgia passed from this life to her heavenly home on October 31, 2023. She was born in Euharlee Georgia, of which she was most proud, to Ernest Fain and Gladys Nelson Goss on March 24, 1931, and was the oldest of five girls.
She married Ralph Leroy Cowart in 1946 and they were married for 59 years until his passing on October 9, 2005.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Ruth Fain Smith and Bennie Benefield.
Jean was instrumental in forming the Euharlee Historical Society, along with Mary Ellen Taff. She served as president and was bestowed the lifelong honorary role as President Emeritus. Anyone wanting to know anything about Euharlee (and having a while to listen), she would tell you stories that few people know. She was also a long-time member of the Cartersville Business and Professional Women’s Club. You could also find her on a softball field or bowling for the Pin Pushers with the Carterville Ladies Bowling league. Jean also had a passion for the community and was heavily involved in the formation of the Community Day Care, side by side with Mary Canty, and served as the President for thirty years.
Prior to her retirement she was employed with the Bartow County Schools and was the bookkeeper at Hamilton Crossing Elementary School. She enjoyed her work, but loved the kids even more.
Those left to cherish the memories include her daughter, Sara Ellen Cowart; Grandchildren Rodney (Jody) Grizzle and Kim Grizzle (Jeff) Harriss. Great grandchildren Cami Ruff (Rhyne) Abernathy, Madalyn Ruff (Todd) Weaver, Joshua Grizzle and Jonathan Grizzle along with great-great grandchildren Copeland and Carter Abernathy and Macy and Lily Weaver. Two Sisters also survive, Elaine Goss and Sue Goss Stone along with numerous nieces and nephews. The family would like to extend special thanks to Agape Hospice Care caring nurses, Chris Parsons and others who cared for her and the staff and caregivers of Tiger Lily Estates Memory Care.
Jean was a member of Zion Hill Baptist Church. In their early years, she was a member of the “Zion Hill Quartet” with her husband and Wayne and Dot Black singing at numerous Churches in and around Bartow County.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held Friday, November 3, 2023, at 2 o’clock in the afternoon at Zion Hill Baptist Church, 1105 Mission Road SW, Cartersville, Georgia with Rev. Jerry Cowart, Rev. Jonathan Padgett and Rev. Jack Edwards officiating. Interment will follow in the Church cemetery.
Serving as pallbearers are Rhyne Abernathy, Todd Weaver and nephews Gene, Ernie and Danny Smith, Ray Benefield and Tommy Mullinax. Honorary pallbearers are Copeland and Carter Abernathy.
