Mr. Hackney was born December 4, 1946 in Hogansville, Georgia, a son of the late William Osborne Hackney and Essie Gladys Lenderman Hackney.
He was an Army veteran of the Viet Nam Conflict and retired from the Georgia Department of Transportation where he worked as a Traffic Engineer. Jerry was a 1965 graduate of Cartersville High School, a longtime member of the Cartersville Country Club and a former winner of the Big Monkey Golf Tournament. He enjoyed all sports, especially golf. He also played tennis and softball and enjoyed trips to Florida. He especially enjoyed being a member of his Monday night card group.
Survivors include his wife of 33 years, Janice R. Hackney, his step daughter, Lisa Patrice McDaniel, of Miami Beach, Florida, sisters and brother in laws, Billie and Guy Gaskin, of Smyrna and Linda and Ferman Lanham, of Acworth, his brother and sister in law, Tim and Kelly Hackney, of Adairsville, nephews and wives, Chad and Donna Gaskin, Brian and Norma Lanham and Jason and Amy Lanham, nieces and husband, Sara Hackney Laterza and Kurtis Laterza and Maylee Hackney, his aunts and uncle, Lettie Ann Driver and Billie Driver and Melba Windsor and her late husband, Gordon, and a number of other nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant son, Christopher.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 A.M. Saturday, December 3, 2011, from the Chapel of the Owen Funeral Home with the Rev. Mike Morgan officiating. Entombment will follow at the Sunset Memory Gardens.
Serving as pallbearers will be Hugh McLain, Dee Lemay, Carter Shaw, Randall Kerr, Louis Smith, Steve Sheffield, Wesley Pruitt and Dennis Hurley. Honorary pallbearers will be B.R. Roberts, Roy Evans, Ronnie Turner, Rickey Stepp, Jim Agan and Olen Suire.
In lieu of flowers those desiring may make contributions to Amedisys Hospice, 1217 Joe Frank Harris Parkway, Cartersville, Ga. 30120.
The family will receive friends at Owen Funeral Home from 4:00 till 8:00 P.M. Friday, December 2, 2011.
