Johnny was born on December 19, 1951, in Cartersville, to the late Mr. Edwin Ray and Mrs. Addie Jo Kown.
Johnny grew up in White, Georgia, and attended Cartersville City Schools, graduating from Cartersville High School. He played baseball, football, and basketball all throughout school, and loved his Purple Hurricanes. It was while he was in high school that Johnny started working for his father's meat business, Ray's Wholesale Meats, where he eventually became the owner in 1989. In addition to sports and running the family business, he was also a Mason at Lodge 63, a car enthusiast, and an avid golfer. He was a loving husband, an amazing father, and a wonderful grandfather. He will be dearly missed by all those who knew him.
Johnny is preceded in death by his parents, as well as his wife of 37 years, Cathy Tidwell Kown. He is also preceded by his infant daughter, Jessica JoRay Kown.
He is survived by his wife, Patti Kown; his son, Derick Kown; his daughter, Shawna Kown Abernathy; his step-daughter, Hope (Seth) Morton. He is also survived by his two sisters, Cheryl (Glenn) Carr and Marilyn Kown Sellers, and mother-in-law, Betty Tidwell. He is also survived by his five grandchildren, Jaycee and Calvin Abernathy, as well as Allee Goodson, Riley and Brooks Morton. He is also survived by his one nephew, Stephen (Kendra) Odom, and his three nieces, Stephanie (Carlos) Freitas, Christal (Eric) Smith, and Heather Sellers. Many other great nieces and nephews also survive to cherish Johnny's memory.
A Celebration of Life Service to honor and celebrate Johnny's life will be conducted on Saturday, April 27, 2019, at eleven o'clock in the morning in the chapel of Owen Funeral Home with Reverend Keith Dempsey officiating. Interment will follow at Woffords Crossroads Baptist Church in White, Georgia. Serving as pallbearers are Derick Kown, Bo Mulkey, Jimmy Garren, Todd Jones, Brian Dabbs, and Joel Portwood. Dwight Vaughan, Ricky Stepp, Jimmy Pike, Bob Mines, Mitchell Scoggins, Lamar Pendley, and Jack Craig will all serve as honorary pallbearers.
The family will receive friends for visitation at the funeral home on Friday, April 26, 2019, from five o'clock in the afternoon until eight o'clock in the evening.
