
Miss Milam attended school in Euharlee, receiving her high school diploma from Seventh District A&M in Powder Springs, GA. She attended Valdosta State College receiving a two-year certificate and later received her BS in Education from Georgia State College for Women in Milledgeville.
She was a retired school teacher, having taught in the one-room schoolhouse at Adam’s Chapel, and schools in Kingston, Cedartown, Calhoun, and Adairsville. Most of her career was spent as a first grade teacher at the Cartersville Primary School. In all of her 40+ years as a teacher she was never absent due to her own illness.
Miss Milam was a long time member of the Cartersville Business & Professional Women’s Club (B&PW), having served as president and in other offices and chairman of the northern district of B&PW for one term. She was a member of the Retired Teachers Association, serving as president for two years. She was a member and officer of the Sam Howell Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, as well as the Pink Ladies of Cartersville Hospital.
She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Cartersville, and a member of the Evening Circle, and was the oldest living member of the congregation at the time of her death.
Miss Milam was predeceased by one sister, Eugenia Milam Jolly, and five brothers, Riley, John, Henry, Robert and Herman Milam. She is survived by a sister-in-law, Marema Milam of Ninety-Six, SC. Eleven nieces and nephews, including locally Genie Jolly Certain (Cartersville) and Robert Jolly (Euharlee), also survive. She has been lovingly cared for in her home by caregivers over the past 15 years.
A memorial celebration of her life will be held at the First Presbyterian Church on Tuesday, September 21st, at 4 pm, with the Rev. Ted Smith officiating. A private family interment will be at Oak Hill Cemetery prior to the service.
