
She was born in Cartersville on February 22, 1917, the daughter of the late John and Nena Ray Kincannon and sister of the late Ray Kincannon and Bill Kincannon. She was preceded in death by her husband Arthur Nelson and a son Ken Nelson.
Mrs. Nelson loved her family, church, and friends. She spent her life serving the needs of others, especially her family. She was a lifelong member of Raccoon Creek Baptist Church where she had served as a Sunday School Teacher, WMU Director, Training Union Leader, and on numerous committees.
She taught first grade for thirty four years in the Bartow County and Cartersville School Systems having taught three generations in some families. She was a graduate of the University of Georgia and received her Master’s degree from Berry College. She loved children, her own, her grandchildren, great grandchildren, neighbors those in her church. Mrs. Nelson was a lifelong member of the Stilesboro Improvement Club and belonged to the Euharlee Narcissus Club, Daughters of the American Revolution, Georgia Mu Master Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, and the Cartersville/Bartow County Retired Teachers.
Mrs. Nelson is survived by her children Charles Daniel and Carol Nelson, Davis Ray and Elizabeth Nelson, Robert Harold Nelson, James Mitchell and Linda Nelson, Larry Wayne and Ann Nelson, and Carolyn Nelson Terry. Mrs. Nelson is also survived by her grandchildren Charlie Nelson, Nena Claire Nelson, Mary Beth and Jeff Tumlin, Lauren Nelson, Julie and Brian Norris, Martin and Tiffany Nelson, Monica and Jarred Whelchel, Jeff Lanham, Michael and Stacy Nelson, Tammy and Sammy Clay, Ken Terry, Brent Terry, seventeen great grandchildren, a special sister-in-law Bobbie Kincannon, niece Lisa Kavanaugh, and grand nephew James Kavanaugh. Mrs. Nelson also leaves behind a special friend, Kelsey Sanford and her loving care providers, Mrs. Carolyn Scott, Mrs. Cathy Hughes, Mrs. Stephanie Andrews, and Mrs. Angie White.
Pall bearers are Steve Tumlin, Billy Cox, Randy Ford, Wayne Thompson, Ernie Gore, Gary Sanford, Phillip Morris, Carl Pinson and Terry Elrod.
Special senior church friends are Mrs. Sarah Pinson, Mrs. Mildred Finley, Mrs. Josie Carnes, Mrs. Betty Chapman, Mrs. Nell Brantley, Mrs. Hallie Cagle, Mrs. Cora Lee Baer, and Mrs. Pauline Overby.
The family expresses deep appreciation to Dr. David Kim, Dr. Melissa Rhoades, Dr. Jason Fields, Dr. Durwood Black, the staff of Coosa Valley Home Health Care, the staff of Cartersville Medical Center, and the staff of Transitions Hospice Care for their loving and untiring care of their mother.
Mrs. Mildred Nelson’s funeral will be at 3:00p.m. on Sunday February 14, 2010, with Rev Michael Boatfield & Rev. James Black officiating, at Raccoon Creek Baptist Church on Highway 113. Mrs. Nelson’s body will lie in state at the church from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. Burial will be at Oak Hill Cemetery in Cartersville.
