Richard enlisted in the United States Navy in 1943 where he spent the next 30 years moving his family to different assigned locations. He mostly enjoyed his years on the Samuel P. Gompers AD-37 where he took his twilight cruise out of San Diego. He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War. Richard earned several medals to include Naval and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, Meritorious Unit Medal, World War II Victory medal and serval more to include Honorable Discharge Button. He was honorably discharged from the Navy in 1974.
Richard is preceded in death by his first wife Jennie Malek Baney and their first child David Baney and grandson Robert Perkins, brother, Robert Baney and his sister Beverly Fay.
He is survived by his three daughters; Pat Perkins Moss estranged daughter, Virginia Baney Traver and Doreen Baney Barcroft and his son-in-law Richard Barcroft. He has three grandchildren, James Perkins, Richard Traver and Ryan Traver of San Diego. He has four great grandchildren Kylee Perkins, Caleb Perkins, Logan Perkins and Rush Traver , his second wife, Sara Jane Stegall Holt of Cartersville, Georgia. Richard met and married Sara Jane in 1976, and they made their home in Cartersville, brother, Gene Baney of Oregon, and his stepchildren, Larry Holt, David Holt and Janice Holt Black and James Holt. Many step grandchildren and great grandchildren also survive to cherish Richard’s memory.
He will be missed by all those who knew and loved him.
A graveside service with Military Honors will be conducted Thursday, August 16, 2018 at 3 o’clock in the afternoon at Georgia National Cemetery, Canton, GA. A reception will follow the services at Owen Funeral Home.
