

With heavy hearts, we announce the peaceful passing of Rita Trotter Powell, age 79, on January 15, 2026, at her home in Rydal, Georgia, where she had been living with her daughter. Born July 3, 1946, in Rome, Georgia, Rita spent the majority of her life in the community she loved so deeply.
Rita was a devoted wife, loving mother, grandmother, sister, and faithful friend. She was the daughter of Nolan Trotter and Helen Terry Trotter. Rita married the love of her life, James “Jimmy” Powell, with whom she shared 42 wonderful years until his passing. Rita was preceded in death by her beloved husband, her parents, and her brother Billy Trotter.
Rita enjoyed a fulfilling career with BellSouth, where she worked for 32 years and was respected for her dedication and expertise. She was a member of the Rome District BellSouth Pioneers and held strong friendships with many colleagues. Rita was also a member of New Armuchee Baptist Church, where her faith was a central and guiding part of her life.
A God-fearing woman with a generous heart, Rita dedicated her life to caring for others. She was known for her playful spirit, her love of life, and her ability to make people feel cherished. Rita loved to dance — whether on the job, at family gatherings, or with friends — and her laughter and joy will long be remembered by those who knew her.
She is survived by her children: Kim Powell Rhodes (Chris) and Eric Powell (Ronda); her cherished grandchildren, Seaborn Watters and Lindsey Powell; her brother Gene Trotter; and her sisters Jackie Trotter Kelly and June Trotter Boiter.
A visitation to celebrate Rita’s life will be held on Saturday, January 24, 2026, from 4:00 – 8:00 PM at the home of her daughter, Kim Rhodes, located at 26 Stephen Way NE, Rydal, GA 30171. A graveside service will be conducted at 2:00 PM on Sunday, January 25, 2026, at Oaknoll Cemetery in Rome, Georgia.
In honoring Rita’s life, the family invites all who were touched by her warmth and kindness to join in remembering a woman who brought love, faith, and light into every life she touched.
