Thomas David Harkins, a faithful servant of Jesus Christ, devoted husband, father, and grandfather, gifted minister, and hardworking entrepreneur, went home to be with the Lord on January 1, 2026, at the age of 88. While his passing brings deep sadness, his family and church community rest in the sure hope of the resurrection and eternal life promised through Jesus Christ.
David lived a life marked by faith in action. As an evangelical Christian, he sought to honor God in every area of his life, using his time, talents, and energy to serve others. Throughout his life, he served faithfully in youth, music, and outreach ministries, always eager to share the Gospel and encourage others in their walk with Christ. He had a special heart for young people and believed deeply in meeting people where they were and pointing them to the transforming love of Jesus.
An entrepreneur by nature, David was known as a "little guy with big ideas." His ventures were as varied as his talents, ranging from men's clothing stores across the Southeast to a private air charter company, an import business, and the development and construction of residential and commercial properties. He approached the marketplace with integrity, diligence, and creativity, viewing his work as another way to serve God and care for people. Solution-oriented and known for "getting the job done," he never hesitated to step in, fix what was broken, and fill the gap wherever he saw a need.
His heart for missions shaped much of his journey. As a younger man, David and his wife, along with their children, served as missionaries in Haiti, where he developed a deep love for the Haitian people and culture. Later in life, he continued that calling closer to home by serving as a supporting minister in a Haitian church in Atlanta. Fluent in Creole, he ministered effectively, building relationships and offering spiritual leadership with compassion and humility.
Born on November 10, 1937, in Calhoun, Georgia, David loved his family deeply and led by example in faith, perseverance, and service. He was a proud grandfather to seven grandchildren, including a precious granddaughter, Audrey Elizabeth, who preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his father, Dorsey; his mother, Vertie; and his two brothers, Harvey and Jesse.
He is survived by his wife, Pat; his sister, Sue (Joe); his four children, DeVee, DeVonne, DeAnne (Ben), and Tom (Robin); and his six grandchildren, Chad, Sam, Jake, Trey, Drew, and Caroline, along with a wide community of believers whose lives were enriched by his faithfulness. Though he will be greatly missed, we do not grieve without hope, for we trust he is now fully restored and rejoicing in the presence of his Savior.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to the caring staff of Amedisys Hospice for their kindness, compassion, and support during his final days. A Homecoming Service will be held on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, at Owen Funeral Home, 12 Collins Drive, Cartersville, Georgia. Receiving of friends will be held from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m., followed by the service at 1:00 p.m. Interment will immediately follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens, 790 Indian Mounds Road, Cartersville, Georgia.
