Mr. Atkins was born January 25, 1931, In Cherokee County, the son of the late, Marion F. Atkins and Beulah (Keel) Atkins. He was retired from Lockheed and was a Veteran having served in the U.S. Navy, U.S. Army and U.S. Airforce. He was a member of the Stilesboro Masonic Lodge #250, and was involved with the Masons for over 60 years. Mr. Atkins was a member of the Boy Scouts of America for 75 years and received his Eagle Scout in 1949, was the first ever given NESA-Northwest Georgia Council Outstanding Eagle Scout Award in 2015 and a Member of Order of Arrow in 1972 and received a Silver Beaver Award in 1965. He was a member of Pleasant Olive Baptist Church in Rydal.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Ruth Marie Poole Atkins and brothers and sisters and nephews,
Surviving are his children, Jeanette and Larry McCollum of Cartersville, Jeanice Atkins of Cleveland, Tennessee, Donna and Barry Jackson of Cartersville and Jinger Hall of St. Augustine, Florida, a brother, Hardie Atkins of Cartersville, seven grandchildren and six great grandchildren and special companion, his pet, Geico.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, March 15, 2016, at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of Owen Funeral Home with Rev. Adam Toole and Rev. Larry Hufstetler officiating.
Burial will follow at Oak Hill Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Monday evening from 4:00-9:00 p.m. and from 11:00a.m.until 2:00 p.m. Tuesday.
Pallbearers will be members of the Boy Scouts of America. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Stilesboro Lodge #260 and members of the Boy Scouts of America.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The Boy Scouts of America, Stilesboro Masonic Lodge or Pleasant Valley Baptist Church.
Owen Funeral Home, 12 Collins Drive, Cartersville, Georgia is in charge of the arrangements.
