William E. Thompson Jr., affectionately known as "Bill," passed away peacefully at the age of 95. Born on November 13, 1930, in Rome, Georgia, to the late William E. Thompson Sr. and Polly Cantrell Thompson, Bill lived a life defined by faith, family, service, and quiet strength.
Bill proudly served his country in the United States Navy before earning his degree from the University of Georgia. He went on to enjoy a long and dedicated career with CSX Railroad, where he worked faithfully until his retirement.
For nearly 50 years, Bill shared a loving marriage with his devoted wife, Carolyn Mooney Thompson. Together they built a life centered on love, loyalty, and family.
In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by his step-mother, Lucille Barton Thompson and beloved grandson, Christopher Thompson.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 49½ years, Carolyn Mooney Thompson; his sister, Shirley Keith; his sons, Timothy (Kelly) Thompson and Nathan (Karen) Thompson; his grandchildren, Matthew Thompson, Zach Thompson, Delaney Thompson, and Ansley Thompson; his special niece and nephew, Melissa (Hartley) Poteet and David Hartley; and his great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.
Bill found great joy in traveling, especially his many trips to Alaska and, in more recent years, exploring America's beautiful National Parks. At home, he was happiest relaxing in his recliner watching classic Westerns. His gentle nature, steady presence, and love for simple pleasures will be fondly remembered by all who knew him.
Bill's legacy is one of hard work, quiet humility, unwavering devotion to his family, and a life well lived. He will be deeply missed and forever cherished by those who loved him.
A Celebration of Bill's life will be held at a later date.
