Alene Sheets Foltz Kelly passed away Thursday, Dec. 20, at Glenaire in Cary, NC. She was born in Winston Salem, NC on Nov. 26, 1921 to Charles Erastus & Alma Hattie McKaughan Sheets. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, Ray Spaugh Foltz & Lem Morris Kelly, and her siblings, Martha Charlotte Sheets Hine, Josephine Davidson, Mildred Sheets, Charles E. Sheets, Jr., John M. Sheets and James Gray Sheets.
She attended American University in Washington, DC and then returned to Winston Salem. She then moved to Raleigh with her husband Ray in 1950. She retired from the NC Highway Commission after working 30 years as the Administrative Assistant to the Chief Engineer. In her free time she enjoyed traveling, going to the beach, playing bridge and painting. She enjoyed living for the past several years at Glenaire retirement community in Cary, NC. Her greatest joy was spending time with her grandchildren.
She was a member of the Micajah Bullock chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Capital City Kiwanis Club. She and her husband Ray were charter members of the Raleigh Moravian Church. In her later years, she became a member of Highland United Methodist Church, and in recent years attended First United Methodist Church of Cary.
She is survived by her daughters, Susan Deyton & husband John, and Cathy Howes & husband Terry, and her grandchildren, Cory Howes & wife Lindsay, Brad Howes, Catherine Howes & husband Brian, and Cameron Howes.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, Dec. 22 at 1:00 p.m. at Raleigh Memorial Park in Raleigh, NC. The family will receive friends at the graveside after the service.
