Barbara “Barbie” Barnes Creech, 75, of Cary passed away with her family by her side on Friday, May 17th, 2024. She was the daughter of the late Richard Merritt Barnes and Charlotte Louise (Scott). She was born on May 30th, 1948, in Burlington, Vermont. Barbie attended Broughton High School and college at Campbell College where she graduated in 1970 with a teaching degree.
She went to work in the public school system as a teacher at Cary Elementary and East Cary Junior High/Middle School for over 30 years. She was very much involved with her students as they knew her as “Mother Goose”. She served as the cheerleading coach, the wrestling coach and the yearbook advisor during her time at the school. More importantly, she had a huge impact on the students that came through her classes.
Barbie was known for her talents of planning weddings and serving as a Girl Scout troop and area leader around the Cary community. Later in life, her love of scrapbooking kept her busy along with her commitment to the American Legion Auxiliary, specifically serving on the Tar Heel Girls State Commission for many years. Her biggest involvement was with the Alpha Delta Kappa Teacher Sorority. She used her talents at creativity in the many various positions she held over the years and truly exemplified their promise of altruism. She and Glenn were very active members at Cary FUMC, having worked in the fair booth and being involved with their Sunday School Class.
She loved, most of all, her time spent with her one and only grandson, J (James Cox IV). Their special pick-up times after school and spending time going strawberry picking and visiting museums bonded them.
Barbie is survived by her loving husband Joseph Glenn Creech of almost 48 years. She and Glenn were married on July 24, 1976, at Fairmont UMC in Raleigh, NC. Also surviving is her daughter, Ashley Creech Cox and her husband James Cox III along with grandson James Cox IV. Also surviving are her sisters-in-law, several nieces and many wonderful friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Richard Scott Barnes.
All those who knew her loved her and she will be missed greatly by her family and close friends.
