Barbara Joan Steffen Ingenito, 90, of Cary, was born to Eternal Life September 2, 2025. Barbara was born in Milwaukee Wisconsin on July 15, 1935 to Peter Cornelius and Josephine Amanda Brahm Steffen. She was married to Dr. Alphonse John Ingenito for 63 years.
Barbara was a graduate of St Mary’s school of Nursing and attended The University of Wisconsin. Her nursing career began in the neonatal unit in Colorado Springs hospital, then included psychiatric, nursing administration (Cypress Glenn in Greenville), and ended with medical transcription and private duty hospice care.
Barbara was a member of St Peter Catholic Church, she sang in the choir, participated in book clubs, and many service opportunities. She supported The Barbershop Singers of The Pamlico Sound and her husband’s various quartets and Pops Choir.
Barbara’s passion was nurturing family and friends, both near and far. She especially loved caring for children with food, hugs, playtime, nature, and reading stories. Gramma and pajamas were always linked together. If you had a favorite dish, Mom knew what it was and knew how to prepare it for you. Music was often heard and prayers were “all-ways” shared. She enjoyed hosting many meals and dinner parties in her home with “Big Al” in Greenville NC and at Pine Knoll Shores. With her husband Al, her yard in Greenville was filled with many flower and vegetable gardens for 44 years. Barbara kept current on world events and local politics. Her love of reading overflowed her book cases with novels, biographies, and spiritual writings. Though Mom was many times quiet and reserved, she had a marvelous way of reaching out to those who were dear to her with visits, phone calls, photo filled letters, emails, and texts. The first retirement project was helping Al edit and self-publish his pharmacology book for lay people. Fond memories with family and friends were enriched with travel that included Italy, Canada, the Caribbean, and many points in the USA.
She is survived by her husband, Dr. Alphonse Ingenito, her sister Laurel Selberg (husband Bob), her brother, Peter Steffen, and her children; daughters Diana Solano (husband George), Jeanne Pendergrass (husband John), Carol Pittman (husband Timmy), and her son James Francis (wife Kerry). Barbara has 5 granddaughters; Isabella Solano, Natalie Solano, Jessica Pendergrass, Joanie Pendergrass, and Julianna Pittman. Barbara has two grandsons; Jack Pendergrass and Jullian Pittman. Gramma also has two great grandchildren; Roméo Donagustin Pendergrass and Brenda Joan Pendergrass.
