

She was born May 11, 1933 in Mercer Co., PA a daughter of Helen Leadmon-Breene. She married Elwood Thompson in 1956 and raised a family in Chicago, IL before moving to Raleigh in 2000. Elwood preceded her in death in November 1998.
Surviving are one son, Stephen (and wife, Cindy) Thompson of Cary; one daughter, Debra (and husband, George) Van of CT; and four grandchildren, Stephanie Van, Nicola Thompson, Michael Thompson, and Brittany Van.
Barbara was an accomplished Breeder of Shetland Sheepdogs contributing significantly to the Sheltie community across the United States, as well as other parts of the world. She got involved with Shelties in the early 1960s with a champion named Charm, and later her beloved Becky, and built a very successful Kennel she called Barwood. Barbara has 134 Champions including 4 - 4 champion litters’. In addition to a very successful breeding program, Barbara was also received her judging license in the 1970s and judged several specialties and two National shows. Barbara shared her knowledge with others and credited many for helping her be successful.
A funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 4, 2014 at Westwood Baptist Church with a visitation following the service. Westwood is located in Cary at 200 Westhigh St., 27513.
