
Baxter M. Walker, Jr. 83 of Cary, NC passed away at home surrounded by his loving family. Baxter was born in Lumberton NC on October 24, 1942, to parents Baxter M. Walker Sr and Hilda Davis Walker.
Baxter married the love of his life, Victoria Gordy, in 1965, and they recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.
Baxter proudly served in the US Navy from 1961 to 1973. Among other honors, Baxter was the recipient of the Purple Heart and the Joint Service Commendation Medal, which is a military decoration for meritorious service and sustained acts of heroism. He and Vicki were stationed in Hawaii where their daughter, Leilani, was born. Following his service in the Vietnam War, they were stationed in Virginia where their son, Baxter III, was born.
After his military career, Baxter acquired two Associate Degrees in Business and worked for the US Postal Service in Cary. He later was the Postmaster in Bahama and then in Holly Springs.
He was a member of Westwood Baptist Church in Cary. He was a former member of First Baptist Church in Cary and Ingleside Baptist in Norfolk VA. He loved serving as a Royal Ambassadors leader and a Deacon.
His Christian faith was the foundation of his life and was reflected in the way he loved and served others. Baxter's servant heart went with him everywhere. With this family. With his friends. With his church. With his career. With his love for Jesus.
Baxter loved to sing. He sang in a gospel trio at Ingleside Baptist Church in Virginia. He began every day joyfully singing. He sang in the car with his family. He had a special birthday song he loved singing to family and friends.
Throughout his life he enjoyed woodworking. In the last few years, he loved going to the Glenaire woodshop to make birdhouses. Most recently, he spent his days on his balcony making walking sticks for family and friends.
Baxter is preceded in death by his parents, Baxter M Walker Sr. and Hilda Davis Walker. Baxter is survived by his loving wife, Victoria (Gordy) Walker, his daughter, Leilani Maria Walker and husband David James, his son, Baxter M. Walker III, and wife Tricia, his four grandchildren: Cashwell Farthing Roberts, and husband Phillip, Davis Farthing, Jonathan Chandler Farthing, and Sophie Anne Walker. And his great granddaughter; Avery Clarke Roberts. He is also survived by his sister, Deen Sweatman.
In keeping with Baxter’s life of service, his hope and vision of being able to donate his body for medical research is being fulfilled. Baxter’s memorial service will be held at Glenaire Retirement Community auditorium at 4000 Glenaire Circle in Cary NC on December 10, 2025, at 2:00 p.m.
