Born in Roxboro, NC on August 12, 1954, to the late Thomas and Annie Mae (Mangum) Adcock. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his younger brother, Charles Adcock.
Brad was a loving husband for over 49 years. He was an avid golfer, enjoyed spending time with his family, and lived for anything Appalachian State-related. He was also a long-time member of First United Methodist Church of Cary.
Brad attended Appalachian State University, where he met the love of his life, Martha, and earned a bachelor’s degree in 1976. He was a recipient of Appalachian’s Outstanding Service award as well as receiving an Honorary Doctorate from ASU. His passion for higher education led him to serving on the Appalachian State Board of Trustees, where he served as chair, and for 12 years as a member of the UNC Board of Governors.
Brad retired from Blue Cross & Blue Shield of North Carolina in 2014 after 36 years as Vice President of Governmental Affairs. Upon retirement, Brad was honored with the Order of the Long Leaf Pine award, North Carolina’s highest honor for exemplary service to the state. After a short-lived retirement, Brad served for 2 years as Legislative Director for Gov. Roy Cooper and then was subsequently appointed as Chair of the NC Lottery Commission.
He is survived by his wife, Martha, his daughter Lauren, his son Brandon, his daughter-in-law Erica, and his two grandchildren, Thomas and Sophia.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at First United Methodist Church of Cary at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 10th. The family will gather and meet with friends at a reception following the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorials be made to either First United Methodist Church, 117 S. Academy St, Cary, NC 27511, or the Appalachian ACCESS Scholarship Program.
