His final days were spent surrounded by his family and loved ones.
Brendan was the second of three sons born to James and Helen (née Preston) Murray on March 8th, 1946. He grew up in Germantown, Philadelphia, PA and attended Norwood Academy and St Joseph’s Preparatory School.
He is preceded in death by his parents, James and Helen Murray; his brothers, Jim Murray and Kevin Murray; and his sisters-in-law, Carole Redding Murray, Mary Lavin Murray, and Janet McIlvaine.
Brendan is survived by his wife of 53 years, Karen Reed (née McIlvaine) Murray; his children, Doug (Melissa Rohrer) Murray, Megan Murray, and Maureen Murray; as well as his grandchildren, Alanna Katz, Aidan Katz, Emory Katz, Reed Murray, Catherine Murray and Noah Rohrer.
Brendan was an accomplished athlete, spending his younger years playing a variety of sports, but he dedicated most of his time to the football field. He would go on to become co-captain of the football team at Villanova University (Class of 1968). After college, he enjoyed many hours on the golf course, where he built many lifelong friendships. When he wasn’t on the links he could often be found watching his children and grandchildren in their various athletic pursuits. He loved his family deeply and was firmly committed to his Catholic faith. While Brendan may have appeared imposing, he was always quick to smile and took jokes in stride, laughing right alongside the pranksters. He was often a man of few words, but he could always offer a listening ear and sage advice.
A funeral mass will be held at St Andrew the Apostle Catholic Church in Apex, NC on June 19th, 2026 at 11am, followed immediately by an inurnment. Visitation will begin at 10am.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his honor to Villanova University Athletics, preferably to the football program, or the charity of your choice.
