Retired Master Sergeant Calvin Richard Berg, known to many as “Cal,” received his crown of glory the morning of December 20, 2018. Cal was born on October 22, 1927 in Auburn, Michigan to parents Ferdinand and Emma Berg. In high school, Cal met the love of his life, his eternal sweetheart Ardella Eirene Holzwart. They married on January 1, 1949 and shared a strong friendship and unwavering deep love. Cal was a loving and devoted father to Richard Dale and Patricia Irene.
Cal was proud of his love of God and service to his country. His sacrifice, dedication and patriotism guided him through 25 years of military service in the US Army, earning him various military honors including the Army Commendation Medal for Meritorious Service at Fort Monmouth, NJ 1961 – 1963, and the Army Commendation Medal for meritorious service at USMA, West Point 1966 – 1969. He was deeply proud to have been a veteran of the Vietnam War. One of his most notable contributions in Vietnam involved leading the strategic wartime computing center at MACV headquarters in Saigon. He was honored to receive the Bronze Star Medal and the Department of Defense Joint Service Commendation Medal during his tour in Vietnam.
In Cal’s family, military service spans four generations, and he was incredibly honored to be part of that tradition. His father was an Army veteran of WWI. Both his grand-daughter, Caitlin, and grandson-in-law, James, serve in the Army. His great-grandson, Kyle, is currently serving in the Marines.
Cal and Ardella moved to Cary, NC in 1981. He worked at Research Triangle Park with Systems Development Corp, ultimately retiring from Unisys in 1992. Cal cherished his entire family, including time spent with his grandchildren, all of who brought him and Ardella great joy. You would often find him in his woodworking shop, or engaging others in what he learned on the History Channel.
Cal is survived by his daughter, Patricia Hagar; his grandchildren, Michelle Berg-Paraso, Michael Berg, David Berg, Mollie Hagar, Caitlin Buchanan, and their spouses; his 11 great-grandchildren; his brother, Lorain Berg; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews; his dear friends, Beth McCord, Ron and Carol Bostick; and his entire Resurrection Lutheran Church family. He is preceded in death by his loving wife, Ardella and his beloved son, Richard.
Visitation will take place on December 29th from 6 – 8pm at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home in Cary, NC. Memorial Services will be held at the Resurrection Lutheran Church on December 31st at 1pm, with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Resurrection Lutheran Church.
