Carolyn was born in Hawarden, Iowa to parents Albert and Helen Henning and graduated from Minot High School in Minot, North Dakota. She received her BA in Education from the University of Sioux Falls in South Dakota. Shortly after marrying her college sweetheart, Ray Camp, she began to teach, first in elementary school and later at the Greenwood Forest Baptist Church preschool. She also greatly enjoyed her work for many years as a Technical Information Specialist at the Research Triangle Institute library, where she specialized in searches on some of the earliest online technical databases (and employed a wonderful network of “her” college students to retrieve and photocopy the articles). She also volunteered as the President of the first Board of Directors for the Triangle Aphasia Project.
Carolyn’s faith was very important to her, and she joined Greenwood Forest Baptist Church in 1969. She and Ray loved their couple’s Sunday School class, and she was active in church life, serving as a deacon and as a Sunday school teacher, and working with many committees and projects on housing and food assistance over the years. The church would form the center of many lifelong friendships.
Most importantly, her life was defined by her determined love for her family and friends. For 18 years she cared for her beloved husband after a stroke significantly altered his life. She was tireless in creating and preserving for him the best life he could live. She also adored her children and grandchildren and celebrated every event or accomplishment, often driving or flying long distances to always be there for them. She shared her love of travel with her family, taking the whole family on trips to Greece, Alaska, and Hawaii and recently going with her granddaughter to “drop her off” for a study abroad program in Spain.
Her friends were her great joy. She unfailingly shared her kindness with them and received so much loving support in return. She enjoyed her high school and college friends, bridge group, book club, anniversary club, gift shop and library committees, her Warren Avenue, Troon, Glenaire friends, and so many more. She loved you and she asked about you until she took her last breath.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Leon Raymond Camp.
She is survived by her two children: David and Susan (Wayne Stocks); grandchildren Christopher (Abby), Sydney (Chris), and Allison; and her great-granddaughter Colbie. She is also survived by her sister Clarice Dalton (Truman) and family, and her sister-in-law Joyce Camp and family.
We wish to extend appreciation to Fran Meier (our adopted family member) for her loving care for both our parents and to thank the wonderful caregivers at Central House Glenaire and Transitions LifeCare Hospice.
A celebration of life service will be held at 2:00 pm on Monday, July 13, 2026, at Glenaire Auditorium, 4000 Glenaire Circle, Cary, NC 27511.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Backpack Buddies, Greenwood Forest Baptist Church. Greenwood Forest Baptist Church 110 SE Maynard Road Cary, NC 27511. https://gfbccary.org/give
