Chuck graduated from Homer High School in 1952, and then his family moved to Evergreen, Colorado. Chuck received his BA in Political Science from the University of Colorado in 1956. He received his J.D. from the University of Michigan Law School in 1959. He received an MA in International Affairs from Princeton University in 1971 and attended the Naval War College in 1980.
He met his future wife, Joan Bowler of Larchmont, New York, while at the University of Michigan. They were married in 1958. Their marriage endured for over 60 years and it remains a testament to the deep respect and love they had for each other.
In 1961, Chuck became a member of the United States diplomatic corps. The Foreign Service life was a new journey for Chuck and Joan. For the next 30 years, Chuck worked as a Foreign Service Officer specializing in trade negotiations. Joan and Chuck raised four children while alternating assignments in Washington, D.C. with assignments in Montreal, Islamabad, Manila and Tokyo. He retired with the rank of Deputy Assistant Secretary of State.
Chuck and Joan returned to Virginia in 1992, retiring to Smith Mountain Lake. Later they moved to North Carolina, first living in Fearrington Village (Pittsboro, NC), and eventually moving to Searstone in Cary, NC for Chuck’s final years.
He is survived by his wife, Joan; and his sister Laura McHam. In addition, he is survived by his four children: Dirk Angevine (Katie) of Denver, CO; Brad Angevine (Sandy) of Pelham, NY; David Angevine (Paula) of Cary, NC; and Susan Mays (Brandon) of Eagle, CO. Chuck was also blessed to have seven grandchildren: Holly, Jacob, Megan, Ruth, Charlie, Eve and Phoebe. His hobbies included tennis, gardening, music, reading, cooking, Spanish, and spending time with his grandchildren whom he loved very much. He will be remembered for enjoying chocolate chip cookies and big bowls of ice cream.
A celebration of life will take place at 2:00 pm on April 22, 2018 at Searstone Retirement Community in Cary, NC. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Chuck’s memory to the Parkinson’s Foundation (www.parkinson.org).
