Guided by a strong sense of purpose and compassion, she pursued a career in nursing through the Board of Cooperative Educational Services in Bellport, New York, earning her Licensed Practical Nurse certification through a program affiliated with St. Charles Hospital.
Cindy began her nursing career at Rutz Nursing Home in 1968. She soon advanced to become the night shift supervisor at Island Manor Nursing Home, where she served from 1969 to 1973. After stepping away from her professional life to raise her family, she returned to the workforce with Homemakers UPJOHN and later joined the VA Hospital in Northport. From 1988 until her retirement in 2004, she provided dedicated care to veterans, demonstrating unwavering commitment and compassion.
Between 1979 and 1991, while working full time and raising three children, Cindy continued her education through Long Island University’s External Degree Program with Suffolk Community College. Her pursuit of higher learning during this demanding period reflected her steadfast determination and dedication to personal growth and service.
She is lovingly remembered by her mother, Shirley Keegan; her daughter and absolute best friend, Jann Henik-Leach; her son-in-law, Rick Leach; her son, Ed Henik Jr.; her grandchildren; and her grand-dogs as she referred to them. She was preceded in death by her father, Charles Keegan; her brother, Robert “Bobby” Keegan; her daughter, Lorri Ann Henik; and her former husband, Ed Henik Sr.
Cindy found joy in life’s simple pleasures. She delighted in Disney classics, Marvel movies and science fiction films that sparked wonder in her days. Game shows like The Price is Right and Family Feud brought laughter into her home. The Price is Right and The Rifleman were favorites that she often watched alongside her beloved son-in-law “Ricochet,” as she affectionately called him. Her collection of Precious Moments figurines reflected the warmth and gentleness of her spirit.
She had the most beautiful blue eyes, the kindest heart, and the sweetest smile. Everyone who met her loved her! Cindy and her daughter, Jann were extremely close and shared a beautiful relationship. Jann drew strength from her mother and referred to her mother as her angel. Her mom was her everything!
Cindy was a devout Catholic and drew strength from her faith during times of hardship. She faced two battles with breast cancer and a thirteen-year journey with Dementia and Alzheimer’s disease with remarkable courage and grace. She was strong, she was tough and she was a fighter, until she ultimately became too tired and The Lord called her home.
