Darrell E. Reynolds, a resident of Cary, North Carolina, was born on January 24, 1949, in Mt. Vernon, Illinois, and completed his time with us on February 3, 2026, following several years of decline due to Alzheimer’s disease.
Darrell joined the United States Marine Corps at the age of 17, serving honorably for three years. After his military service, he earned his GED and a business degree through evening studies while beginning what would become a 34-year career with the United States Postal Service. Starting as a city carrier, he steadily rose through the management ranks in the Chicago area, ultimately retiring in 2004 as Postmaster of Galesburg, Illinois.
Outside of work, Darrell found joy in the simple pleasures of life. He was an avid golfer and bowler who appreciated friendly competition, time spent outdoors, and the camaraderie that came with both sports. Those who knew him well would also say he may have missed his true calling as a pool shark, always ready for a game and rarely one to underestimate with a cue in his hand. He also had a deep love for animals, showing a special patience and gentleness toward them that reflected his own kind nature. Animals seemed naturally drawn to him, and he never missed an opportunity to offer care, attention, or quiet companionship.
Darrell is survived by his beloved wife, Jennifer Nolden Whalen Reynolds, and his stepdaughters, Gracie Whalen and Caitlin Whalen Donnelly, and their families. We often say we didn’t know how much we needed him until he came along. Darrell was the calm in every storm, the steady voice of reason amid chaos, and the quiet reassurance we leaned on when the future felt uncertain. He loved us through the hard moments, challenged us when we resisted, and walked beside us when we no longer had the strength to walk alone. Through his actions, Darrell showed us what genuine kindness looks like and embodied a patience and acceptance that could only belong to a truly good man.
Darrell is also survived by his sister, Debbie, his brother, Bill, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brothers Gary, Howard, and Michael, and his sister Marilyn.
After cremation, Darrell will return to Illinois for interment at the Moss Ridge Cemetery in Carthage, IL at a later date.
