David Lee Baumer of Cary, NC, passed away peacefully on October 20th at the age of 77. Raised in a large and loving catholic family in Upper Arlington, OH, David followed in his father’s footsteps by building a distinguished career as a professor at North Carolina State University. With a Ph.D from the University of Virginia and a law degree from The University of Miami, he inspired generations of students in the classroom and advanced the field of law and economics through his scholarship.
For over 50 years, David was a generous, hardworking, and fun-loving husband to Joan (née Malinas). As a devoted father to Erik and Paul, he encouraged his sons to pursue their dreams without fear. And as a grandfather to Elizabeth, Sydney, and Myles, he delighted in their personalities and interests.
As a loyal friend, devoted colleague and mentor to his students, he was loved and respected by those who were fortunate enough to enjoy his deep intellectual honesty, questions and insights. He made everyone better. His family, friends, and golfing buddies will miss his humor, intelligence, and love of lively political debates.
David’s Celebration of Life date has not yet been set. In lieu of flowers for the family, you may support the efforts of Johns Hopkins Department of Neurology, a research center of excellence for normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH), Parkinson’s Disease, and Lewy Body Dementia.
