OBITUARY

David Michael Shaffer

May 5, 1971 – September 29, 2021
Obituary of David Michael Shaffer
IN THE CARE OF

Brown-Wynne Funeral Home

David Shaffer passed away unexpectedly in the early hours of Wednesday, September 29th with family at his side. He was a loyal and dedicated husband of 26 years to Jessica Shaffer, and a loving and supportive father to Becky Shaffer Laviska and Jacob Shaffer.

He leaves behind his father and stepmother, Leonard and Katherine Shaffer, his siblings, Robin Rooks, Christine Browning and John Klein. David was welcomed into Heaven by his mother , Rebecca Barnhill Shaffer and his brother, William Bradley Shaffer. He is survived by countless friends that he connected with along his journey. David left behind a legacy of love. He went out of way daily to serve the Lord, his family and his friends.

Born in Durham, North Carolina, David was the youngest son of Leonard Bradley Shaffer and the late Rebecca Barnhill Shaffer. He grew up in the Raleigh area and attended college at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, where he was a proud co-founder of the campus’

Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity. After graduating with a bachelor’s in political science, David joined the United States Airforce, where he met his beloved wife, Jessica. The two both describe their first encounter at the Shepherd Air Force base recreation center as ‘love at first sight’. David and Jessica were married in April of 1995 in Colorado Springs in the presence of family and friends. They welcomed their daughter Becky into the world in 1997 and their family was complete when their son Jacob was born in 2000.

While being a husband and father was arguably his favorite ‘job’, David used his talent and charisma over the years to be a salesman of anything from cars and Kirby vacuums to air filters and storage units. For the past fifteen years, he worked for Joven Property Group alongside his father and sister as a real estate broker. David loved working with his family, he was a faithful and dutiful son and brother. He not only worked diligently, but provided love and laughter in the office each day. He joyfully did everything and anything to provide for his family.

David was larger than life. He was truly the life of the party. He lit up every room he walked into. As a self-taught man of many talents, there wasn’t anything he couldn’t do. Over the years David enjoyed hunting and fishing with his son, playing golf, cycling with his CBC group, brewing beer, making sourdough bread, spending time on the lake, riding his motorcycle, having ‘sunset celebrations’ with his wife, frying chicken, personalizing lunch bags for his kids before school, talking with his sister on the phone, gardening, hosting oasis youth group, late night talks with his daughter, and swimming in his backyard. During quarantine he especially loved taking long bike rides with his brother Brad where they shared long talks along the way. Dave was a gifted musician who sang and played the guitar and piano. Some of his favorite songs to play and sing were ‘Piano Man’, ‘Mr. Jones’, ‘Wish you Were Here’, ‘Hotel California’, ‘What was I Thinkin’’, and anything by James Taylor, among many others.

David loved his Lord and Savior. He showed his love in the Lord by being a loving and giving human to all that he encountered. He was a Patriot and had an unwavering love for his Country. Being a Family Man was his greatest endeavor and his gift to this world. His presence in this world will be immensely missed. He was unique, joyful, dedicated and fiercely loved. This world has lost a true talent and a one of a kind man. He will be missed in a way that words cannot explain. We take comfort that he is in Heaven sitting center stage entertaining the Angels.
