Doris Manning, née Doris Lee McKeand, was born on November 23, 1925 in Kenova, WV, to Sadie and Homer McKeand. She had two sisters, Elizabeth and Mabel, and one brother, Floyd. She attended Marshall University and soon after met David Manning. The two were introduced while both performing for the Charleston Light Opera - she in the chorus and he as a tenor. They wed in 1956 in Dave's home state of California and remained happily married for 65 years.
Doris worked as the Personnel Director at the Diamond in Charleston and went on to work in the Personnel Department for the State of West Virginia, personally campaigning for Jay Rockefeller's successful election to Governor. Mr. and Mrs. Manning soon became parents to two daughters, Teresa in 1957 and Gayle in 1959. The couple moved to the Cary, NC area in 1980, where they have since resided.
Throughout her long life, Doris enjoyed many hobbies, including painting and knitting, interior design, Jazzercise, collecting antiques, and extensive traveling with Dave. She was a lifelong animal lover, especially their beloved cats.
Doris passed away at the age of 95 on the 4th of July, 2021. She is survived by her loving husband, Dave, of Cary, NC; two daughters, Teresa of Cary, NC and Gayle of the Nashville, TN area. The Mannings also have four grandchildren, Holly of Pittsburgh, PA, Erica, John and David of Nashville, TN, as well as 6 great grandchildren.
Our memories of Doris, as a wife, mom and Nana, feel like home to us, so whenever our minds wander, we will always find our way back to her.
"Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted." Matthew 5:4
