Edward was born in Chicago, IL and moved to Milwaukee, WI with his family at a young age. He graduated from Rufus King High School, and received a degree in chemistry from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. After serving honorably in the United States Army, Edward worked as a chemist at the S.C. Johnson and Son Company in Racine, WI. He then attended the University of Minnesota where he received a Ph.D. in organic chemistry.
Edward later worked at Dr. Salsbury’s Laboratories in Charles City, IA, Corning Laboratories in Cedar Falls, IA, and Lakeway/Bofors Nobel Chemicals in Muskegon, MI. He was a longtime resident of Coopersville, MI, where he enjoyed fishing, swimming, and travelling. Edward was an avid gardener and took great pride in his vegetable and flower gardens and fruit trees.
Edward was preceded in death by his parents, Edward W. and Eunice M. (Clutts) Berndt.
He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Bertha; brothers, Glenn and his wife, Barbara, John and his wife, Jeanne; sister, Barbara Briscoe and her husband, James; and many nieces and nephews.
A private memorial service will be held at the Hospice of Wake County chapel. Burial will be in St. Joseph’s cemetery in East Pleasant Plain, IA, at a later date.
