Elizabeth Iris Taylor Belken, 90, of Raleigh, died Saturday, August 3, 2012 at Independence Village in Raleigh.
Elizabeth (who was called Bette by her friends), was born on August 23, 1922 in Beloit, Wisconsin to the late Ward Taylor and Waive Atkinson Taylor. Elizabeth graduated from Beloit High School in 1939 and attended the University of Wisconsin at Madison for 2 years before getting married. Elizabeth was married on February 14, 1942 to her high school sweetheart, Louis G. Belken Sr, who was a plant manager and a World War II veteran. Elizabeth was a housewife, but also worked as a administrative assistant at Swedish American Hospital in Rockford, IL and at Rex Hospital in Raleigh, NC. Elizabeth enjoyed gardening, reading, sailing, ocean cruises, and tennis. Elizabeth especially loved to play bridge, and she was an active member of several bridge clubs.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Louis G. Belken; brother, Harold Taylor.
Elizabeth is survived by her children Kathryn Belken Carey of Cary, NC and Louis Belken Jr of Scottsdale, AZ; grandchildren, Dennis Carey Jr. and his wife Eileen of Raleigh; Robert Carey of Apex; great grandchildren, Hayden Carey; and Madeline Carey both of Apex.
A memorial service will be held August 15 at 3pm at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home Chapel, 200 SE Maynard Road, Cary, NC 27511. The family will receive friends immediately following the service.
