Eric Richard Schumann, 55, of Cary, formerly of Waterloo Village, NJ, passed away Thursday, March 14, 2013, at his home in Cary.

Eric was born in 1957 in Newton, NJ, to the late Frederick John Schumann and Irma Ann Nagy Schumann. He was a graduate of the Lawrenceville School in Lawrenceville, NJ, and attended Case Western Reserve University. Eric was a 6-year veteran of the US Navy, where he served on Guam for almost 4 years as an electronics technician. After leaving the Navy, Eric earned his BSEE degree from the Milwaukee School of Engineering and then his Masters in Electrical Engineering from Penn State University, with a major in antenna technology and electromagnetic compatibility. Eric then worked for a company in Connecticut prior to joining IBM and relocating to the Triangle area in 1996. He was employed with IBM for over 17 years.

Eric enjoyed being physically active and being out in nature—hiking and biking were his favorites. He loved the Jersey shore and the Wrightsville Beach area and grew to also love the mountains, especially the area around Blowing Rock, NC. Eric had a huge network of friends, family, and colleagues and had a great love for animals, especially bunnies and cats. Three weeks prior to his death, he lost his beloved cat, Pepper.

Eric was preceded in death by his parents, Frederick John Schumann and Irma Ann Nagy Schumann, and his beloved Aunt "Sis" Lillian E. Schumann.

He is survived by his companion, Virginia “Ginny” Fox of Durham, NC; sister, Anne Schumann of Manhattan, NY; brothers, Jack Schumann and wife, Mary Beth of Mountain Lakes, NJ, and Frederick Joseph Schumann and wife, Cindy of Roxbury, NJ; and many nieces; nephews; and countless friends.

The family will receive friends 7:30-9:30 pm on Tuesday, March 19, 2013, at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 200 SE Maynard Rd, Cary, NC 27511. A Celebration of Life service will be held 3:00 pm at the Eno River Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, 4907 Garrett Rd, Durham, NC 27707. A graveside service will be held at Stanhope Union Cemetery in Stanhope, NJ, at a later date.

I served with Eric in Guam. Tonight I am watching some videos from 1986 the week in July when I left the island and many friends. I had not seen Eric since 1988 when he came to visit me in Akron, Ohio. He is in many of these videos and he was a good friend. Many years have passed and I was saddened to find this thru Google. May you rest in peace Eric knowing that you have touched many lives in a wonderful way.

My condolences to Eric's family and close friends. While at IBM I had many working meetings with Eric in the EMC and other test labs. I can still recall his strong voice resounding over the dim of other work activity. Eric was a great guy and will be missed.

This is a great loss to me personally as well to IBM. Eric was always friendly, extremely helpful and knowledgeable. I have know Eric since I joined IBM 16 years ago and enjoyed working with him on the few projects we did together. Things will never be the same, and Eric will be very sorely missed!

Eric, your sudden loss both as a friend and colleague for the past 17 years has left a huge void on so many levels that words can not describe. I'm glad we got to share one more "Doggie Day" lunch outing with the gang and work together in the lab on your last day although neither of us knew those would be the final hours that I will cherish forever. You always thought of others and were there to lend support whether it be an ear to listen, help with a project, give expert technical advice, or just being a friend people could count on. You left your mark everywhere I look in the EMC labs to serve as constant remembrance of your many contributions to the EMC team and blazed a trail for others to try and follow in your footsteps. Rest in peace my friend, I will always remember you in my heart.

I had the opportunity to work with Eric in 2003 and just recently in 2012. Eric was always great to work with, a sincere and honest person. Life is too short and to leave so suddenly is a void that takes a long time to fill.

A very fitting quote for Eric are the lyrics of a Fred Small song, "Everything Possible."
"And the only measures of your words and your deeds are the love you leave behind you when you're gone." Eric was loved and will be greatly missed.

Eric we will miss you a lot. This was a huge shock to us. I have known you for many years here at IBM. You helped me a lot when it came to the technical side of calibration for your departments equipment. Every time I saw you in the hall or when you would stop by the machine shop to talk business or just to say hi you always had a smile on your face and in your voice. May God be with you and your family.
