It is with great sadness that the family of Ernesto (“Ernie”) Sadiasa Hernandez announces his passing, on Friday, June 4, 2021, at the age of 81 years. Ernie will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 47 years, Aguida (Aida), and his daughter, Ernaida (Erna). Ernie will also be fondly remembered by his two grandchildren, Lukas and Noah, by his siblings, Yolanda (Yoly) Carrasca and Manuel (Manny) Hernandez and their families.
Ernie was born in Lemery, Batangas, Philippines on August 18, 1939. After receiving his Associate Degree from University of the East in Metro Manila, he worked as a banker at Merchant’s Bank, also in Manila. Soon after, he moved to Hong Kong for a short time and eventually settled in New York, USA in 1969. It was in New York City where he met and married his wife, Aguida in 1974. He worked as a banker at Banco Real, and in 1979 opened Erna’s International Cuisine along Roosevelt Avenue in Woodside, Queens with his wife and brother. It was one of the first Filipino restaurants in an area that later came to be known as Little Manila.
He was known to friends for his kindness and humor but also his green thumb. There were always beautiful blooms and lush green plants in his home. He loved and cared for the red and white roses and grapevines that grew outside his home in Briarwood, Queens. He loved traveling to different places around the world with his wife such as Dubai, Macau, France, and Italy. They were avid tennis fans and made sure to watch the US Open in person every year whenever possible.
Ernie was a devout Catholic who found fulfillment in his involvement in the Divine Mercy Prayer Community in NY as well as being instrumental in raising funds for various Catholic missions in the Philippines that helped to build local chapels, aid orphans and poor children, the incarcerated, and the sick and elderly. He was generous in giving aid when needed, but also in friendship and in how he shared his light-hearted humor with all that knew him.
Friends and family are welcomed to remember him at his wake on Thursday, June 10 from 6pm-8pm EST at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 200 SE Maynard Rd, Cary, NC 27511.
His funeral mass will be on Friday, June 11 at 2pm EST at St. Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Church, 804 High House Rd, Cary, NC 27513.
