Dr. Gert Georg Larbig, 92, of Cary, North Carolina, passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday, January 11, 2023.
Gert was born on March 26, 1930, in Frankfurt am Main-Hoechst, Germany, to Karl and Else Larbig. He was the eldest of three boys. As a young boy, Gert spent his summers and fall vacations at his grandparents’ farm and winery in Gundheim, where he loved to help harvest the grains and grapes.
Gert attended medical school at Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt, where he studied to become a Pathologist. He completed his residency at Albany Memorial Hospital in Albany, New York, where he met the love of his life and his future wife, Jean, who was a nurse.
The family moved to Longwood, Florida, in the early ’70s, where Gert became a partner in a local Pathology group, Derrick & Associates. He loved the warm weather and enjoyed boating and gardening. He developed a passion for model trains and became an avid train collector. Gert and Jean traveled across the US attending model train shows, and they built a large train layout in his garage, where they enjoyed creating the scenery, painting train cars, and tinkering.
In his retirement, Gert split his time between Florida and the beautiful mountains of Highlands, North Carolina, where he and Jean loved to go for rest and relaxation. In 2020, Gert moved to Cary to live with his daughter and son-in-law. Gert was predeceased by his wife, Jean, and his son, Mark Larbig. He is survived by three children, Stephen Larbig, Christopher Larbig (Lonise), and Cynthia Rowe (Tom), nine grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and his brother Dieter.
A Memorial mass will be held on January 17, 2023, at St. Michael Catholic Church, 804 High House Road., Cary, NC 27513. www.stmichaelcary.org.
