Harold Burton Hill

August 9, 1917February 6, 2013

Harold Burton Hill passed away on February 6, 2013 in the home of his son, where he had been residing for the past six years. He was born in Alton, Illinois on August 9, 1917 and moved to Chicago where he started a career with R.R. Donnelley & Sons, his one and only employer and the largest printing firm in the country. Like most men of his generation, his work was interrupted by World War II and he spent four years in the Navy. He is a decorated Navy Veteran and achieved the Purple Heart decoration during his time in the service. Upon returning home he attended Northwestern University and majored in Business. He continued his career and married the love of his life Genevieve Kurke; they shared 66 years together before her death in 2007.

He leaves behind two children, his son, Burton (and daughter-in-law Mari-Jo) and daughter Barbara. Also left behind are a beautiful granddaughter Whitney along with numerous nieces and nephews.

During his career, Harold reached a supervisory level position in Chicago and helped Donnelley find an additional location in Lancaster PA. He was one of the first employees of Donnelley to work in Lancaster and ended his service to the company there after thirty-three years. He was the Superintendent of the original plant on Steel Way which at its peak held over 300 employees.

Harold enjoyed golf, bridge and many friendships in Lancaster. He loved Penn State football and was often in attendance for the Nittany Lions games. He has had a long life and will be swinging his clubs in heaven.

He will join his wife Genevieve in the National Cemetery at Indiantown Gap, PA where he will be laid to rest with military honors. Service information will be announced at a later date.

The family wishes to convey a special thank you to Right at Home of Wake County and special caregivers Dee Glaser and Barbara Franklin. They have helped make Harold’s final days comfortable and we are very grateful for their hard work and caring service.
