

Hank served during WWII as a Seabee in the US Navy from 1943-1946 and was stationed in the Pacific. During his service, he was wounded in action in the Battle of Tinian and was awarded the Purple Heart. Hank was part of the team that constructed the runway for the Enola Gay. In 1949, he graduated from Marshall University in Huntington, WV with a Bachelor of Arts. He attended Louisiana State University in extended graduate studies in Business Administration. Hank was an active and loyal member of White Plains United Methodist Church and its Pathfinders Sunday School Class. He was a member of MENSA and Grand Lodge of Kentucky Free Masons (Lodge 235). He was also a member and former President of Golden Key Kiwanis Club in Cary. He was awarded the Order of the Long Leaf Pine by Governor James B. Martin in 1990. Prior to his retirement, he was employed at the NC State Licensing Board of Contractors.
He is survived by his daughters, Deborah McCown Jessey and husband, Simon and Margaret (Peggy) McCown Freniere and husband, Bruce; granddaughter, Meredith Ryan; brother, John Sanford McCown and wife, Dottie; companion, Millie Munn and her family.
The family will receive friends from 4-6p.m. Thursday, May 19, 2011 at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 200 SE Maynard Road, Cary.
A memorial service will be held 11a.m. Friday, May 20, 2011 at White Plains United Methodist Church, 313 SE Maynard Road, Cary.
Inurnment will be at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, VA.
