Irene was born in Bremen, Germany, on December 7, 1921. A Holocaust survivor, she married Jacobus “Jack” Johannes Leenaarts (deceased) of Drunen, North Brabant, Netherlands in 1947. Along with their three children, Irene and Jack immigrated to the United States in 1953, moving to Middletown, New York. In 1969, the family settled in MacGregor Downs, Cary, NC. Irene’s experiences during WWII gifted her with an appreciation for life, love, and family. Among her many passions, Irene was a devoted hospital volunteer; church secretary; speaker of languages; lover of opera and traveling; and connoisseur of the good things in life. Always ready with a welcoming smile and a compassionate heart, Irene was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend.
She is survived by her daughter Emke (Bruce) Cusmano of Atlanta, GA and her son Jack P. (Gretchen) Leenaarts of Cary; grandchildren: Julie (Justin) Silber, Phil Cusmano of Atlanta, GA, Jason (Marissa) Leenaarts of Akron, OH, and Meaghan (Jason) Beasley of Kitty Hawk, NC; and her great-grandchildren: Arden Silber and Jackson Leenaarts. Irene was predeceased by her husband, Jack, in 1993 and her eldest son, Paul (Winnie) Leenaarts in 2011.
A memorial gathering will be held on Sunday, May 31, 2015 from 2:00-4:00PM at Browne-Wynne Funeral Home, 200 SE Maynard Rd, Cary, NC; 919-467-8108. Irene will be inurned next to her husband, Jack, at Raleigh Memorial Park.
