July 6, 1928 – November 26, 2010
James Johnson Allen of Apex and formerly of Laurinburg, NC, died peacefully Friday morning.
A native of Richmond County, he was the son of the late Henry Thomas Allen and Vera Thomas Allen. Jimmy served in the US Navy aboard the air craft carriers USS Leyte and the USS Philipine Sea. On one of his assignments, he sailed to the South Pole with Admiral Richard E. Byrd. He retired from then Sears and Roebuck as a repairman after more than 25 years service. Jimmy was known far and wide for his ability to repair anything. His greater skill was his quick smile and funny storytelling. His family will treasure his memory and the happy times when he had everyone “in stitches”.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Christine Turner Allen of Apex; daughter Joyce Westerman of Williamsburg, VA; son James J. Allen of Raleigh, NC; brothers Eugene Allen of Liberty, NC; Ben Allen of Ellerbe, NC; Bruce Allen and Steve Allen of Rockingham; sister Marice Covington of Rockingham, NC; and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his brother, the late Thomas Allen of Rockingham, NC and grandson, James Gregory Allen of Raleigh, NC.
A celebration of Jimmy’s life will be held Tuesday, November 30, 2010, at 11:00 am at Apex United Methodist Church, 100 S. Hughes St., Apex, NC 27502.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Apex United Methodist Church or Amedisys Hospice Services, 220 New Fidelity Court, Garner, NC 27529.
