What a wonderful service & celebration for our brother Cotton and his life.  It was very uplifting & I was amazed at the strength of his family especially Lera.  Dear Lord, “give to the departed eternal rest, let light perpetual shine upon them”.

I am so sorry to learn of Cotton’s passing.  Out four years together at Western Carolina University were filled with fun times as fellow business majors, pledge brothers, fraternity brothers and roommates our sophomore year.  We understand time moves on faster than we would like but true friendship is timeless.  Cotton was a true friend to many.  May God’s grace and love comfort his family and many friends in the days, months and years ahead as we remember Cotton’s time shared with all over the years.

We are so saddened to hear of Cotton’s passing. He was not only my “Big Brother” during the fraternity years at WCU, I considered him my mentor and big brother in all the years since. So many great years at the beach retreats and other fraternity functions. Pam and I will miss his quick wit and constant smile and our hearts are heavy with his loss. Cotton will always be remembered as a friend and fraternity brother who had a smile, a laugh, an outstanding sense of humor and a shoulder to lend to solving a problem and listening to your story. Cotton always had a smile on his face. Even during the difficult times, he never lost his sense of humor or his positivity. His faith was extraordinary. This and his personality is what drove us very close to him and Lera. We became so close that we felt that they were our family. Sharing updates about each other and communicating with each other consistently. We have so many good memories with them. Cotton and Lera are very family-oriented and care so much about their grandchildren. We joined them on many outings, from visiting the Greensboro science museum to spend the day there to meeting for our favorite tradition each Thursday to share banana splits together. During the medical trials confronted by Cotton, we witnessed how hard Lera fought for Cotton day and night to make sure that he was being treated the absolute best medically and never allowed for anything to fall within the cracks when it came to his health. I am happy to say that Cotton had expressed to me how extremely blessed he was to have Lera, his lovely wife. We cannot express how saddened we are for the loss of Cotton. We will continue to keep Lera and the family in our prayers. Enid and Hortencia Aguirre



Our families growing up spent a lot of time together when we were kids.  My Dad and Cotton’s Dad worked together,  Cotton and I were the same age, my sister Alice and his sister Kay were very good friends, my brother. Bob and Norman were also friends.  Our families got together for picnics and made so many  wonderful memories.

Cotton and I went all through school together. We played together at the city pool in the summers. Cotton was always fun to be around. I know all his family will miss him greatly. Rest In Peace my friend. Prayers of comfort for the family.

Lera,  so sorry to hear about “Cotton”.  We will be thinking of you and your family during this very difficult time. We had many very good times at WCU and Rick fondly remembers his Pi Kappa Alpha times with him.   You know it took me a long time to learn that his name was James. Prayers for all of you. I am deeply saddened with Cotton’s passing.  I will always remember the good times at WCU and Pi Kappa Alpha especially being my horseshoe partner when we won the campus intramural competition.  Cotton was an example of optimism.  During all of his medical challenges he never lost his smile or his optimism about what the future held for him.  I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the love between Cotton and Lera.  Lera was his soulmate and is the definition of unconditional love.  She never left his side during the many weeks he spent in Duke and continued her unwavering support as they enjoyed his life that followed.   We were all fortunate to know and call Cotton “Brother.”   Rest in please my friend and brother.  Kathy and I will continue to keep Lera and family in our thoughts and  prayers.

I am so saddened by Cotton's passing.   He was a very special person who always brought laugher when he was with you.  He never knew a stranger and always made you feel welcomed.  We had many great times on the golf course.  He almost made his cheeseless, meatless pizza sound good to those he was with!
He will be greatly missed!!!
