

Jennie Lou Morris Pegram, of Cary, passed away peacefully on July 20, 2025. Born on November 4, 1932 in Fremont, North Carolina, Jennie was a beloved daughter, mother, wife, grandmother, aunt and friend. Throughout her life, she touched the lives of many, with her profound sense of unconditional love, kindness and compassion.
Early in life, Jennie’s family moved to Cary. She attended Cary High School, where she was an honor student and outstanding athlete - leading the Cary Imps Women’s Basketball team to numerous wins and championships. After high school, she played national AAU basketball for Hanes Hosiery, a powerhouse of the 1950s. She had a rare basketball talent that even challenged the boys!
Jennie is a charter member of the Cary High School Athletic Hall of Fame, and was named on the centennial celebration of the NC Athletic Association’s list of “100 TO REMEMBER – Female Athletes”.
In 1958, Jennie married Leo Pegram of Apex. They had four children together, to whom she dedicated her life. She later re-entered the workforce with Hudson Belk, and eventually North Carolina State University, where she retired. She enjoyed her subsequent years traveling, bowling, church activities, and time with friends and family. She had a generous heart and passion for helping others.
Jennie and Leo were founding members of Greenwood Forest Baptist Church in Cary. Jenny would draw her strength and benevolence from the church, and cherished her connection to that community, and everything it stood for.
Jennie is survived by her children, Wayne, Ron, Jerry and Sheri Ray; seven grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, five nieces and two nephews. She was predeceased by parents Connie W. Morris and Zilphia Garris Morris, husband Leo, sisters Clyde, Dollie, Melba and Kate, and brother Perry.
A memorial service will be held on August 21st, 2025 at 4 p.m. at Brown Wynne Funeral Home of Cary, the family will receive friends following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family request memorial contributions in Jennie's honor be made to the Greenwood Forest Baptist Church Capital Improvements Fund.
