James Leroy Harvey – Holly Springs, NC

James “Jim” L. Harvey born December 30th, 1943 – November 21st, 2019, passed away at the age of 75 after a five and a half year battle with cancer. Born in Pennsylvania and moving to South Florida as a child, Jim was well known for his dedication to his career and family. Jim graduated from Miami Norland Highschool and started a career in retail, with Burdines Department Store. Jim retired as Sr. Vice President of Burdines in 1990 (after 29 years of service to the company) and moved his family to Dublin, Ohio to take the position as President of Safelite Auto Glass. In 1995, Jim moved his family to Charlotte, NC where he later retired as the Executive Vice President of Operations for Belk Department Stores in 2009.

Jim was an intensely loyal family man. He married the love of his life, Judie, on Valentines Day in 1975 in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. They had two children, Jennifer and Justin. In 2013 Jim and Judie moved to Holly Springs, NC to be closer to their first grandchild.

Jim’s passion for golf was what defined him later in life. As a member of 12 Oaks Golf Club, you could find him on the golf course 4-5 times a week. He was a big jokester and trash talker on the course.

The only thing Jim loved more than golf was his family. He is survived by his wife, Judie Harvey, his daughter, Jennifer and husband Billy Mayo of Jacksonville, Florida, his son, Justin and wife Erin Harvey of Holly Springs, NC. He was Poppy to his grandchildren, Campbell and Jackson Harvey and was looking forward to the upcoming birth of Baby Mayo. Jim has one sister, Janine Harvey, of Hollywood, Florida and many other family members.

He is preceded in death by his Mother, Jean Harvey Petrucci and his father Neal Harvey.

Family and friends are invited to a celebration of Jim’s life being held on Saturday December 14th from 4-6PM at 12 Oaks Golf Club in Holly Springs, NC.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made in his name to Orphans Promise, C/O CBN, 977 Centerville Turnpike, Virginia Beach, VA 23463, or online at www.orphanspromise.org/JimHarvey .

We would like to thank the countless number of Jim’s friends and family who have reached out over the past five and a half years to offer support. In particular, to Dr. Neal Ready, Jennifer Tenhover NP and Dr. David Yoo at the Duke Cancer Center.

Mike and I only met Jim once and that was over the weekend of Christian and Taylor’s wedding in Palm Springs, California. Judie and Jim sat across from our family at the rehearsal dinner and all of us thoroughly enjoyed getting to know them....a beautiful, fun loving couple. Though Jim struggled a bit with his speech that night and had to watch everyone eating the delicious food that he could not touch; his constant smile spoke volumes. He was not going to miss this family event for the world! We came to realize in that very brief time that Jim loved his family and friends deeply and he lived every moment of his life to the fullest. Such a beautiful memory to leave for those still here. Sending you our love and prayers for His perfect comfort. Mike and Cindy Ostrom

Luisa and I are shocked and saddened by the news of Jim’s passing . He was a fighter not only the last five difficult years but all his life. He was my boss and my friend at Burdines and he brought quality and values to a difficult retail operations environment. He was the proverbial good guy. I will miss him and pray for his eternal rest and for consolation for Judy and children. As I absorb this reality I may want to share more memories of this good man, husband, father, grandfather
brilliant executive and above all, friend.

I had the honor of working with Jim at Belk and considered him a mentor and friend. My thoughts and prayers are with Judi and his family during this time.

I’m so saddened by the news of Jim’s passing, but at the same time, I feel greatly privileged to have known him during his time in Canada about a decade ago. Not only was he fundamental in kick starting my executive career, I still apply what I learned from him to this day.

To the family of Jim......

I had the please of working with Jim at Belk when fine jewelry was purchased to run as an owned department. Jim had some of the best insight I have seen in the business. He will be missed.

Jim took a chance on me as a new director and I will be forever appreciative to him.

God bless and warm wishes to the family.

I'm glad I was able to get a few more golf rounds with Jim and the other Belk Boys. He will be remembered as a good friend and a competitive golfer. Truly one of the good guys!
