

Joan Steinmetz Miller, 94, passed away Friday, September 5th in Cary, NC, with her family by her side.
A native of New Jersey, Joan was born in Weehawken on July 5, 1931, the daughter of the late Carl and Emily Steinmetz. After graduating from Columbia H.S., she continued her education to become a dental assistant. She worked as a dental assistant in Milburn until her marriage in June 1958 to the late Paul D. Miller, Jr.
Joan lived in Convent Station, NJ, for 28 years. Over the 55 years of their marriage, Paul’s work allowed them to live in France, Germany, Holland, and Venezuela. Joan was active in her neighborhood’s hospital fundraising organization and a volunteer at Morristown Memorial Hospital in NJ.
After she and Paul moved to Cary in 1992 Joan did volunteer work at Wake Med Cary Hospital and the CCA Dorcas shop. She was a member of the Kirk of Kildaire Presbyterian Church in Cary. After moving to Cary’s Glenaire Retirement Community in 2005, she volunteered at their adult day care center and also at the community’s gift shop.
She is survived by her daughter Debra Miller Davis and son-in-law Brad Davis, of Durham; her daughter Susan Miller Strode and son-in-law Phillip Strode of Summerville, SC; a brother, Martin Steinmetz of Wellesley, MA; grandchildren Ryan and Cara Davis, and Brian, Matthew and Nathan Strode, and 6 great grandchildren.
