Joe Michau, age 79, of Cary, died peacefully in his sleep, surrounded by family, Monday, July 8, 2019 at Rex Hospital of Raleigh following a prolonged battle with COPD and lung cancer. Born in Arkansas, he was the son of the late Marvin and Billie Michau. He was a Vietnam Veteran, proudly serving our country in the US Air Force. He was a member of the American Legion and was retired from a long and distinguished career with Bell Atlantic. He later worked with Coldwell Banker Advantage New Homes and was the owner of Dwellings Property Management.

Joe was a man of strong convictions; none more central to his core than his love of his family. This he demonstrated through not only his unflagging work ethic, but also through the love and support he provided to them all. He was dedicated to his wife Charlotte, who was the love of his life. He was a cheerleader, advice-giver, and role model to his children and grandchildren. Their blended family was Joe’s greatest source of pride. He had a great faith in God and country, attending Woodhaven Baptist Church when his health would allow. He played golf as another way to spend time with family and friends, and enjoyed cheering for the Carolina Panthers.

Though his illnesses got the best of him in the end, he never lost his fight or his faith. Throughout his many stays in Rex Hospital, as many nurses and physicians can attest to, he remained an “active participant” in his medical care. Even in his final days, he asked for information to be given to him straight, and he always made the tough decisions himself.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Terry Michau. Survivors include his wife, Charlotte Michau, who “took his breath away”; children, Dr. Kenneth Michau II (Kate), Andrea Michau Graziano (Philip), Jay Hager (Susan), Gary Hager (Beth), Laura Hager; grandchildren, Alexis Graziano, Annabella Graziano, Elaine Hager, Adam Hager, Coty Hager, Chase Hager, Zachary Haught, Jacob Haught, Jake Scarlett, Will Scarlett,; great grandchildren, Carcen Hager, Declan Hager, Evelyn Hager; sister, Deloyte Bean (Danny); a special cousin, Bob Michau (Cindy); and many nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 1:00 to 2:00 PM on Sunday, July 14, 2019 at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home in Cary. Funeral services will be at 2:00 PM at the funeral home.
