He graduated from Northern Nash High School before earning his Associate’s Degree in Information Technology from Wake Tech. John worked as an IT Support Specialist for many years prior to his passing. He was a beloved son, brother, uncle and friend. He will be remembered for his caring heart and love of adventure. John grew up skateboarding and bike riding, both loves he shared with his little brother and many friends. He learned how to work on cars from his father, and would frequently use his skills to help others. He enjoyed trips to the NC mountains and coast, especially camping and fishing trips. Prior to settling in the Triangle area, John lived in Arizona and Oregon, and would write letters home; beautifully describing his adventures out west. John had a way with words, whether it was a well written letter, writing for a zine, or reading the scripture in church as a child. He was insightful, kind, caring, a thoughtful gift giver, and a gentle soul. He loved spending time with family, playing with his niece, and had a big sweet tooth.
He was preceded in death by his father, John L. Barbee, III. He is survived by his mother, Wendy M. Barbee of Swansboro, NC; his sister Nicole Barbee Knight of Swansboro, NC; his brother Michael Barbee (Lindsey) of Raleigh, NC; as well his nieces and nephews: Nick, Sara, Thomas, and Nora Jane; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, July 25, 2026 at 2pm at the home of Michael & Lindsey Barbee. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Backpack Buddies or a charity of your choice.
