Retired Lieutenant Colonel John C. Donahue, originally from Whitefish Bay, Wisconsin, and a proud alumnus of the University of Montana, passed away peacefully on August 23, 2025, in Cary, North Carolina, at the age of 90. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and patriot, John led an extraordinary life dedicated to family, service, and adventure. He always wanted to know what was going on with everyone and got a special kick out of watching his grandchildren and great-grandchildren grow up. John cherished family gatherings and took deep joy in the stories and milestones of each loved one.
Born and raised with a spirit of duty and exploration, John spent 21 distinguished years serving in the United States Army, with postings that took him across the globe—including Vietnam, Japan, Korea, Hawaii, and many locations throughout the United States. His service during the Vietnam War earned him the respect and admiration of those who served alongside him.
John was known for his love of travel and his talent for researching and planning each journey—he always knew the restaurants to try wherever he went. A detail-oriented adventurer, he relished discovering new places and sharing his tips with friends and family. His curiosity was matched by a zest for life, making him both interesting and truly caring to those fortunate enough to know him.
In addition to his military and travel accomplishments, John excelled as a financial advisor, offering guidance and wisdom to his family and community. He had a particular fondness for oysters and delighted in introducing others to his favorite seafood experiences.
John gave back as an umpire and referee for football, baseball, and basketball—serving in youth sports, high school games, and even at the prisons in Leavenworth. He saw sports as a way to build character and community, bringing fairness and enthusiasm to every game he officiated.
Above all, John was a caring, interesting, and adventurous soul whose detail-oriented nature and love for learning made every moment with him memorable. He and his beloved wife of 68 years, Gail Donahue, built a beautiful life together filled with travel, laughter, and the deep love of family. John is survived by his devoted wife Gail, his four children and their spouses—Kelly Herder, Erin Williams, Mike Donahue, and Patrick Donahue—along with ten grandchildren and five and a half great-grandchildren, all of whom were blessed by his wisdom and warmth.
A military burial with full honors will be held at Arlington National Cemetery on October 29, 2025, where his legacy of service and love will be remembered by all who knew him. John C. Donahue will be deeply missed and forever honored for his courage, loyalty, and the countless lives he touched.
