June Moore Hamilton, a 40-year resident of Cary, NC, died peacefully Friday evening, June 19th, 2026, surrounded by family. She was born in Kingston, PA on June 22, 1937, to Joseph and Martha Moore. Her family later moved to Ridley Park, PA. June met the man who would become the love of her life, Don Hamilton, at Olivett Presbyterian Church in Prospect Park when they were children. They would remain friends through Sunday school and youth group. June was the oldest of five children and Don was an only child. He enjoyed spending time with June’s large family. June graduated from Ridley Township High School. She then went to work for Bell Telephone as a draftsperson, one of only a few women doing that job at the time. Those years of friendship soon turned into love. After Don graduated from college, the two were married on July 12, 1958, at the church where they met as children. A year later June and Don welcomed their first child, Don Jr., followed by Stephen, and Lisa.
In 1968, Don’s job with IBM meant a move to Hyde Park, NY, where they joined St. James Episcopal Church. June would later become the church’s secretary. June’s busy life included Den mother, co-founder of Meals on Wheels of Hyde Park, and volunteering with the PTA and Well-baby clinic. In 1985, Don accepted an assignment to work in IBM’s London office. They lived there for almost 3 years, traveling abroad every chance they got. June and Don returned to the US and settled in Cary, NC, in late 1987. June became a licensed real estate agent but never activated her license. She volunteered in the administration office at WakeMed Cary for several years. June later joined the P.E.O. (Philanthropic Educational Organization) Sisterhood, a non-profit organization that raises funds to promote higher education for women by providing scholarships, grants and loans. June enjoyed playing the piano, bridge, and bowling, and eventually learned to love sailing almost as much as Don.
June treasured the time spent with their grandkids watching soccer games and gymnastics practices, and celebrating birthday parties, and graduations. Some of their fondest memories were made during the annual family trip to Holden beach. The beach was June’s happy place. Spending time with her children and grandchildren swimming, playing board games and horseshoes, riding jet skis, watching baby turtles emerge from their nest, and cooking and eating together was her idea of heaven.
June and Don were fortunate to have so many friendships that spanned decades. Together they enjoyed listening to music, sailing, traveling, dining out, laughing and celebrating. June had a soft spot for their furry friends as well, treating each one like the valuable family member they were. The animals ran the gamut from numerous fish, turtles, mice, birds, dogs and cats to one rabbit. But her dogs, Samsson and Misty, held a special place in her heart.
June will always be remembered as a loving wife, mother, sister, grandmother, aunt, devoted friend and gracious hostess. Whether June was in her kitchen whipping up a feast for thirty or dinner for Don, she’d always say, “Better to have too much, than not enough”. She was as generous with her love as she was with her food. June will be missed every day.
June was preceded in death by her parents; husband, W. Donald Hamilton Sr.; son, W. Donald Hamilton, Jr.; and brothers, George Moore and David Moore, and is survived by her children and their families; Stephen Hamilton and daughter, Eva Hamilton of Nairobi, Kenya; Lisa and Frank Dziepak and daughter, Katy Dziepak, of Clayton, NC; daughter-in-law Lois Hamilton of Johns Creek, GA and children, William Hamilton and Mary Grace Alley, and Hartley and Tyler DeWitt and son, Russell, all of Atlanta, GA.
