Kevin Shreve Waters, 70, passed away on August 20, 2024 at UNC Rex Hospital in Raleigh, North Carolina after a courageous two-year battle with cancer, surrounded by immediate family. He is survived by his loving wife of 33 years, Iris Dickson Waters, and his children, Lauren Waters Yongue (Logan) and Taylor Shreve Waters.
Kevin was born at Fort Belvoir, Virginia on April 12, 1954 into a military family. His childhood was spent in a collection of many locations spanning from Hawaii to Georgia, with his high school years spent in central Illinois where he graduated from Taylorville High School in 1972.
Kevin served 4 years in the Army as a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne at Fort Bragg (now Fort Liberty) from 1976 to 1980. After earning his bachelor’s degree from Methodist College in 1980, he spent over 20 years with Progress Energy in Raleigh working as a Principal Data Analyst.
Kevin was a voracious reader, a member of Mensa and had an encyclopedic knowledge on various topics including politics, art, architecture, music and film. However, one of his greatest passions was being a master in the kitchen and on the grill. He loved to discover new cuisines and restaurants, often planning trips around a city’s culinary offerings. He was an avid fan of The Atlanta Braves and thoroughly enjoyed following professional golf, including attending The Masters on multiple occasions. He had a love for West Highland Terriers and was always happy to appease his 3-year-old Westie, Zoe, with her high demand for belly rubs.
Kevin was active in his retirement years, taking seminars through OLLI at Duke University and North Carolina State University on a wide range of topics from German opera to the study of the universe. He was a dedicated volunteer with Meals on Wheels, The American Red Cross as well as The Town of Cary.
More than any of the above, Kevin’s greatest love was his children, Lauren, a Doctor of Physical Therapy, and Taylor, who attained his Masters in Analytics with a background in Engineering. He attended every game and event, encouraged them in their academic pursuits and was justly proud of their achievements.
Kevin was predeceased by his parents, Charles Henry Waters (Betty) and Barbara Jenkins Hallock (Duncan). Kevin is also survived by his 3 siblings, Charles Henry Waters, Jr. (Sandy), Barbara Brooke Ballantyne (Blaine) and Mary Hilleary Waters (Rory Seeber).
A memorial service will be held at the First United Methodist Church, 117 South Academy Street, Cary, North Carolina, 27511 on Friday, August 30, 2024, at 3 p.m. Visitation will be held from 2-3 p.m. at the church.
Kevin will be laid to rest in the shade of a tree at Wake Memorial Park in Cary, North Carolina.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in his honor to The American Cancer Society, The American Red Cross or Meals on Wheels of Wake County.
